>> president obama wrapping up his rally in denver and meeting with the audience after his comments. we are opening up the phone winds, as we did all evening after the debate and all morning on "washington journal." here are the numbers for you. you can also follow us on facebook and on twitter. we are using hashtag #cspan2012. tom is on our republicans' line. what do you think of the debates last night and the president's comments this afternoon? >> hello? >> tom, go ahead. >> maybe it is because i tutor children in languages and math, but i was listening to the president and his speech today talk about how he is reducing the deficit by ending the war and nev -- war in afghanistan and using the money saved to bring down the deficit. the simple term for that is that we will no longer be spending money for that war. we will no longer be taking money pile up in one place and moving it to another. the use of language is very bad on this. it even was last night, when he spoke not from a prepared plan, but just from talking points. i found that when romney would offer something specific,
saying ron paul can't win. it every time he gets up to speak he draws a bigger crowds then obama or romney. the motion is amazing. i run into so many people -- you always hear they cannot win. if they could get more coverage other than c-span, c-span are the only people that are fair to third-party people compared to fox or cnn or ms nbc or any of the other ones. i wish more people would watch c-span and educate themselves to receive more votes. host: thank you for the call. one of your saying -- as we said earlier, ross perot sitting down for his first extended interview in many years. an interview conducted in plano, texas on thursday by richard wealth. they were agreeing to have our cameras in the room. it is a 70 minute conversation including david walker, who has been working with him on a number of initiatives to educate voters on issues in the election. the debt and deficit exceed $16 trillion. his article will appear tomorrow in usa today. we will show you an excerpt in just a moment. first some context to ross perot. when he ran as a third-party, he talked about the grow
debate, president obama and mitt romney are doing the same thing, they are playing down their own debating skills. they are taughting the other's talents, the latest poll shows a close gap. karen traverse has more from washington. >> reporter: this campaign has been going on for nearly two years. finally, it is debate season for the nominees. the time when americans seem to really start paying attention. president obama is rehearsing with john kerry while mitt romney is squaring off against rob portman. both have challenges and check lifts. is working on shorter answers and trying to avoid sounding like the professor he was before the white house. democrats say he needs to look strong and forceful and not appear irritated or i am pat. >> they are trying to get him in the mode of being able to answer questions short and to the point. so it is more like his man errisms, style, and the way he comes across. >> reporter: and mitt romney, he has to seem friend li err, after the 47% comments. he needs to show compassion and connect with voters. romney arrived in colorado to continue his
're in the cnn newsroom where we're live this saturday, september 29th. i'm fredricka whitfield. president obama and mitt romney are about to come face to face in the first presidential debate. just four days away, both obama and romney are practicing this weekend while their campaigns are presenting each candidate as the underdog. paul is in the battleground state of new hampshire. >> hey, fred. as running mate paul ryan makes the rounds on the campaign trail both here in new hampshire and ohio, his boss mitt romney is hunkering down, getting ready for the debate on wednesday, the first presidential showdown between him and president barack obama. romney spending a lot of this weekend in debate preparation. the same thing for the president. he's off the campaign trail today, tomorrow he does go out to nevada, but he's spending a lot of this weekend, we believe, behind closed doors getting ready. meanwhile, both campaigns are playing the expectations game, trying to lower the bar for their candidates. even the candidates themselves are doing it. take a listen to mitt romney recently on the campa
for the debate on wednesday, the first presidential showdown between him and president barack obama. romney spending a lot of this weekend in debate preparation. the same thing for the president. he's off the campaign trail today, tomorrow he does go out to nevada, but he's spending a lot of this weekend, we believe, behind closed doors getting ready. meanwhile, both campaigns are playing the expectations game, trying to lower the bar for their candidates. even the candidates themselves are doing it. take a listen to mitt romney recently on the campaign trail. >> he's president of the united states, he's a very effective speaker. >> he's a very eloquent speaker, and so i'm sure in the debates, as last time in his debates with senator mccain, he'll be very eloquent. >> it's not only mitt romney and his campaign playing the game. so is the obama campaign. >> what history tells us, that challengers normally win the first debate. just by the fact that they're standing on the stage with the president. that elevates them, and they normally come into these things as underdogs. we're coming into th
for ohio. and that lead in ohio for president obama is really significant. because ohio is almost critically important for mitt romney to get to 270 electoral votes. the other thing about it is, people are feeling better about the economy. as bad as things are, 40% of people think that the country is heading on the right track. and that tells all of us, especially the polling experts, wendy, that people are feeling better about the direction of the country, and so they have to feel really badly about the country, if they wanted to eject the current president of the united states and take a bet on someone they don't know very well. that's the final thing. mitt romney is way behind president obama in popularity. and that's his challenge tonight. mitt romney has to come out here tonight and try to be nice, and affable and likable and get past that 47% comment that he made, which seemed to be writing off half of the american voters. at the same time he's got to be tough and aggressive and try to rattle president obama. and that is a very hard combination. >> all right. andrea mitchell
celebrate president barack obama's election to president but that doesn't mean we fought all the problems, that inclusion and diversity we have lot of work to do. i think that we have to set about doing that work, we need to improve k-12 education and close thoseducation gaps that we see, absolutely we do. but you don't do that with policies that strip away pell grants, that defund public education. you don't do that with policies that make it really difficult for students to get student loan or to close down opportunities for very qualified african american students to get in to college and universities and to more than survive it but to be great success. >> closing the gap, school choice being one of those that would help african americans and latinos, if parents would have their choice to be able to choose for their children what schools to go to instead of being stuck in the failed schools. >> and the -- >> wait, shy not have been given public money to send my son to private school. we need to support our public schools and improve the education that vast majority of children are gett
